We have a pug. They are perfect because they are small dogs, but they aren't fluffy little princesses. They are sturdy and you can hug them and they don't yap. I hate little yapping dogs, and I always grew up with large dogs, but we live in a condo, so we compromised. And I love my pug. You should definitly consider it.

Oh, and Strawberry--I shouldn't generalize because I have met some well-behaved, well-trained, non-bejeweled small dogs that I have liked quite a bit. Your dog looks very sweet indeed.

Yes, the small dog policy is because of our apartment complex. It's a cat and small dog only environment, but we will definitely be considering dog-friendliness in our next place.

And it's a great idea to get an older dog. We definitely considered that when we lived in our old place, and we may still do that at some point; it would just have to be a dog who loved cats.

Is the "only small dogs allowed" thing b/c of your current dwelling? If so, I hope when you guys move next year you make "dog friendly" a criteria of your new house search.

I'm not a small dog person either. We had hoped for a lab-sized dog. Our guy is a mutt, they thought he would be 60 lbs full grown. He only ended up being 40, but we've found it to be the perfect size! I hope you can make the dog dreams a reality soon!!!

I'm going to chime in because I have a chihuahua, and I don't take offense at your comments. I agree that people who get dogs as fashion accessories and parade them around as such are insane. It always makes me mad when I see little dogs in handbags wearing tiaras. It's a DOG. I got my chihuahua about 6 years ago, slightly before the Paris Hilton/Tinkerbell mania. I had always loved the breed because I like the little ones, they're super intelligent and, when well-trained, can be really fantastic dogs, as I can attest with mine. Everyone who meets my dog suddenly has a change of heart if they didn't like little dogs before. She's sweet, quiet, affectionate and like I said, smart- knows all the tricks bigger dogs can do and then some. The thing that bothers me is that people let things slide with little dogs. They think because they're so small, they don't need to train them. And then they get mad when the dogs leave messes around or bark incessantly, when it's their own fault. Anyway, my point is that little dogs can be really great when they're trained, and I highly recommend chihuahuas :-)

Oh, and here's a picture of Hazel: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3145/2573219982_759de98b2c.jpg?v=0

How come small dogs in diamond encrusted handbag carriers get to go where no dogs are allowed? I'm sick of seeing them in shops and restaurants. Just because it's wearing a frock and leg warmers - it's still a dog!

If you're short on time, have you thought about getting an old dog from the pound? I'm sure they could advise you on one that no longer required much exercise anbd you'd be giving them a comfortable retirement. They would love to sleep all day while you're out at work/school. The cats, on the other hand....
